The GRRRLZ ROCK logo was inspired by the work of Angela Davis. Her inspiring words from the famous quote below are what led Matrisha Armitage to run this program and found MEPAA as an umbrella organization. As Matrisha put it, "I work to live by these words everyday. I constantly change the things I cannot accept!" As a female performer who started in the industry at a young age, Matrisha could not accept the way that youth and women were being treated in these very unsafe environments. Rather than run from this issue, Matrisha decided to change the landscape of our community and create safe spaces for women and youth to share their talents and express themselves freely. Through this work MEPAA was able to reach out to artists and performers of all backgrounds, colors, economic levels, and various abilities and give them all a safe place to become members of the arts community, free from judgement and criticism. |
